The Waisman Center’s new
laboratory space accommodates investigators working on a
range of important research projects, including the study of
stem cells to understand development of the nervous system in
Down syndrome and fragile X syndrome; the use of retinal stem
cells to model development and degeneration of the eye; the use
of mouse models to understand the social deficit of autism and
learning and memory; and gene therapy for childhood neurological
disorders.
The
Waisman Center’s newly expanded facilities creates stronger
links among our basic and clinical scientists and clinicians,
investigators in the behavioral and social sciences, graduate
students, and the UW-Madison biomedical community.
The Waisman Center is
located on the west side of the UW-Madison campus within a
network of research and healthcare facilities including the UW
Medical School, the UW Hospital and Clinics, the School of
Pharmacy, and a new Health Sciences Learning Center.
The campus has an ambitious
development plan
for the west campus that includes construction of a new $67
million, 80-bed Children’s Hospital, slated for completion in
2007, and a new $133.9 million Interdisciplinary Biomedical
Research Complex, which will be opened in spring of 2008. These
facilities, both located across the street from the Waisman
Center, will house programs and specialized facilities that are
synergistic with Waisman Center research projects, will yield
new opportunities for collaboration, and will facilitate the
recruitment of new biomedical investigators to the Waisman
Center. In addition, the planned $375 million Wisconsin
Institutes for Discovery, will also create many exciting new
opportunities for collaborative and innovative biomedical
research for Waisman Center investigators.
